Sunday Email #36: The Mind Game

If you're new to my subscription and wondering what is a "Sunday Email", it's an email full of my rants, personal tips and opinions on marketing especially in the "internet marketing" niche. Sometimes, opinions on life. Whatever it is... it'll give you value after spending time reading it. To make sure you won't miss any future issue, subscriber for free at http://www.sundayemail.com.

You know-- sometimes my Sunday Emails can be harshed. Cuts through like a ninja's blade. But come on, they're my rants. If I want to keep everyone happy and write about the colorful rainbow, birds chirping, flowers blooming, etc then I should just opens up a nursery home and take care of children.

So if you can relate to what I wrote when reading it-- good because I know it had just served the purpose of helping people.

One more thing-- it'll offend marketers. I hope you're not the one.

Re: The Mind Game

If you can't overcome the fear of losing, then forget about internet marketing or your big goal of running an internet business. Go get a GOOD JOB and find ways to be happy that way. You'll be happier.

Accept this reality – building and running an internet business IS A BUSINESS. In business, you don't win all of the time and you can't be a cheapskate if you want to achieve big.

When it comes to the mind thingy, the number #1 thing that business owners need to overcome is fear. If you don't know what it is or don't know how to overcome it, go read Anthony Robbins book called, The Unlimited Power. I don't teach this stuff here. I teach internet marketing.

Like, I have customers who asked refunds for my course because they say it didn't work and they lose money. It's fine for me to process that (all refunds and cancelations are processed personally by me so that I know who they are) but the interesting part is this - OTHERS are happily making money from the same strategies and techniques from the course. And if that's not a strong proof, get this -- I AM practicing what I teach and making money from the internet, so I KNOW THEY WORK.

The problem is, these people have fear of losing and that will just block their way to success. Well, if you're one of them, you would probably argue with me or post some nasty comments here – I mean, who would want to admit it's their own fault? So really, I won't bother to win my case arguing on this blog.

If I teach a guy about Adwords and he loses $30 when he advertised, what does it means? It means, he lost that darn $30 for his dinner because something didn't go right that time! THAT'S IT. He loses. Does that mean that the entire course or Google Adwords program itself doesn't work?

Who knows – maybe he was promoting some silly product that no one will buy or competing in the wrong market. Of course he loses the money. Or maybe, all of this Google Adwords stuff is new and he doesn't understand yet. Just like if you ever trade stocks – do you win the first time you place your trade? I know I didn't get it right and I still can't get it right.

But if the $30 bucks guy can overcome the fear of losing and didn't call it quit, who knows what future might lies in front of him. Maybe he'll make money after losing $60 and truly understands how Adwords work. The point is, lose enough and you'll learn.

Then there are people who ask for refunds because they worry that the money-back-guarantee due date is near. What kind of mentality is that? Think abundance, not scarcity. If your brain is not tune to be successful but held back by thinking of plan B, your mind's not helping you bucko. What have Law of Attraction been teaching you?

Have you heard the quote, "Burn the bridge"? Now, that's extreme and not recommended. Here's the thing - you don't need to burn any bridge because $47 or $97 refund is not going to help you become richer anyway.

Note: Of course you should ask for a refund if the strategies are a pile of crappy nonsense. You can identify that when the authors/marketers do not give you any proof how the strategies are working for their own internet businesses. Beware of scammers.

Fear of losing money is the hardest to overcome because our relationship with money is very emotional. At the same time, there's also the fear of losing time.

So that's why those who have that kind of fear keep on hopping from courses to courses because whenever whatever they're doing right now doesn't seems to work, they 'cut loss' and try another one before it's 'too late'. What the... .

Then they ask for refunds because the systems 'do not work' in a week. It's interesting how people think building an internet business will only take a week when in reality, conventional businesses will generally take at least 6 months to just break even. Go back to the drawing board - an internet business IS A BUSINESS, only different platform.

I AM NOT AFRAID OF LOSING. And I hope you too.

Not because I'm being arrogant. It's because I will not pursue something if I'm not willing to stick on it. It just doesn't make sense to do that way. So if I have to lose to win, I WILL LOSE.

I will complain.

I will be frustrated.

But I will be successful one way or the other.

And I won't ask for a refund because it'll instantly terminate my relationship with the seller and lose my credibility with him permanently.

If you've find value in these tips, please leave a Comment or feedback? Needless to say, I will definitely appreciate it because I read all Comments personally and gotten the chance to know you at the same time.

I enjoyed that little rant of yours Patric. Let's face it, no matter how good the information is given some people will never put it to proper use and will then complain that it doesn't work. If it works for some people then it MUST work so the problem obviously lies with the person who doesn't use it properly.

Successful people are not lucky people but are those who willing to work hard and persevere despite all the setbacks.

A winning mindset and hard work can overcome most difficulties and if anyone doesn't have those then they shouldn't be in business.

Thank you Patric... I fully agree with you. I am currently reading Mark Burnett's book "Jump In, even if you don't know how to swim" (you know, he is producer of Survivor, Apprentice & The Contender) and its inspiring how he faced fear, took it on and became successful. He continues to face fear and I think he will continue to grow. In his book he says "if all else fails, there is still the future..."

Superrrrrrb!

"If you can't overcome the fear of losing, then forget about internet marketing or your big goal of running an internet business. Go get a GOOD JOB and find ways to be happy that way. You'll be happier." Truerer words have never been spoken.

Most people think the Internet ride is without bumps and will be smooth sailing (boy I wish that were true) but the fact is you've gotta wrap your head around losing in order to find the winners, and all systems are the same none are fool proof.

Thanks for such a well crafted post my friend.

Hey Patrick, good post. I have found that most people do not like to accept the responsibility of accountability. Everybody wants to cruise along and take credit when something works, but are quick to point the finger at someone or something else when the plan doesn't come together. My old granddaddy used to tell me to be careful pointing the finger at someone else because, when you do that, there are three more of your fingers pointing back at you!!! Good wisdom from an old guy that never marketed anything in his lifetime!!! Tom

Wow Patric, you hit the nail right on the head. I'm one of those people. With in the past 2 months alone, I've bought probably at least 7 different products. Most I've kept, because I knew that the information will be valuable one I get my own head right...

Hi Patric,

What you say makes absolute sense.
Some people just cannot get honest and have a look at themselves and just keep blaming others for their lack of success.

Also some people, to an extent myself ,keep chasing the golden nugget of internet marketing which we deep down know dosent exist.

Simple rules are ;

1) Purchase a product
2) Read and understand it
3) Apply the techniques/information
4) Test and tweak if needed
5) Ask for help from the products support group if needed
6)If succesful , ramp up/do it again or both
7) If unsuccesful ,deeply analyse why this is so and then try it again.
8) If unsuccesful once again , rethink what you are doing /the system you are using -or both.
Then and only then should you consider a refund.

I think it all comes down to being consistent, committed , realistic positive and using strategies/techniques that have been proven to work.

Patrics strategies/techniques work.

thanks Pat

Positive thinking is the only way to go..if you lose at something thats how it is...then you re group and try again...the thing is that sometime your going to do it right and then you remember to do it right again and again..
I have gained and lost for over 60 years and we are still working at it..if we get rich great and if we do not so be it...we are all going to the same end, just in different directions and paths... thanks amross

Hi Patric,

Thank you for your tip. This is a very important and very valuable one.
It's a great thing to remember.

Sometimes I have been there-being afraid of, not exactly losing money but of not having more later and of running out of time for something. But as you said,it's nonsense, where is that leading?-Nowhere.
I'm still learning-I have many things to learn, but won't quit and now with less possibilties to have fear of losing(thanks to the awareness of this that reading your post brings)

All that you have said is true.
Thank you for reminding us about this, and other ways I had not looked at it before.

Thank you again and be well,

Ivan.

Very well said Patric! I am new to internet marketing (at least taking action on what I have learned) and I am not finding it easy! I am not very technically knowledgeable and have found it very challenging to get even basic things done in creating a blog. I do not quit once I decide to pursue a goal. I do not have a lot of money to spend on solutions at this point. So I read blogs and look for help. I will succeed, over time! Thank you for your "rant". One thing I do know; good content and a desire to help others goes a long way!

Sincerely,

Dr. Lenny

I'm agreed with you Patric.

Honestly, I'm still get lose every time I try to achieve my goal - to have sustain income from internet business.

Although I keep losing, there a lot of thing I learn from that.I choose not to think negatively about losing because I know by divert the thinking to more positively that will make me become more stronger person.

Well said, Patric.

I'm the testimonial of what you've said. I put your stuff into action and it WORKS well for me.

I quit my awful job in 2005 because of your course. But why then there are others who are still stuck?

What you've said is true.

Fear is definitely one of the reason why people still fail. Inaction is another culprit. Action but act incorrectly is another.

Thank you again, and happy new year!

Is this your Chinese New Year Resolution?

Internet Marketing is totally about "mind game". This is what i learn from subscribtion emails ,articles site etc.

Thanks for this article as i learn something good from it as you said
"If you can't overcome the fear of losing, then forget about internet marketing or your big goal of running an internet business. Go get a GOOD JOB and find ways to be happy that way. You'll be happier"

I'll keep fighting.....

Fear must be overcome but it's not number one.

Focus is more important. A better name for it was coined by a personal development master a generation before Tony Robbins was born.

The term is "Definiteness of Purpose".

I like this concept because it denotes Focus while also indicating Decisive Action.

With your correct statements added the result is one of the major key formulas for success.

Have a great week.

Very good points, Patric. I hate to have to ask for refunds. I did have to do so recently, but not from fear and not for any course. I fell ill and missed some deadlines to resign from membership sites. Now, if I just miss the deadline because of carelessness, I figure I have to eat the fee for a month. The only times I have asked for refunds were: when my computer got attacked by a trojan which my usually excellent anti-virus software didn't catch and I lost the ability to go online or to even know for what I had signed up; when I ended up in the hospital for emergency surgery and missed some deadlines that way; and when I was on strong pain medications and tried to still work online, but failed to read the offers very well. I have commented on the current membership site "bonus" trend in my blog at http://jemyl.net/blog It is called "A plethora of hooks" and is a bit of a rant.

I have only once returned a course. That was because I discovered as soon as I read the thing that it was an almost exact duplicate of another course I had on using adwords and adsense. Of course, the second author didn't say the wonderful way to earn money was to set up adwords ads and use adsense codes, or I would never have ordered it in the first place!

As for my relationship with the authors of these things, I usually tell them the truth if I have to call them to cancel. If I found their club or membership site of value but too expensive for me right now, I tell them so and also tell them that I hope to be able to come back or join another of their membership programs later. That is why I admire people like Edmund Loh, who has a free site and an upgrade. At jemyl.net, I plan to do the same. There will always be a free membership with some benefits. Later, when I launch the paid member upgrade, I will present the benefits to the free members and allow them to upgrade. I plan to never use the "free for one month, or one week, or X number of days" then automatically billed to your credit card type of membership. I want my members to have to opt in and upgrade for me to be able to charge their cards.

As for the one "guru" whose course I did return, I don't want a good relationship with him! I continue to find his advertising and sales letters misleading and contacting him was a nightmare! He and the other "guru" who recently sent me a zip file contaminated with a virus (the software worked well this time) are on the top of my list of people I really would rather not meet, let alone do business with.

Generally, I am not afraid to lose a few dollars. I have lost plenty over the past three years or more that I have been learning about Internet Marketing. Currently, my income is dismal since I have not been physically able to get to all of my usual venues for selling my jewelry and the one I can get to is not the best one. I am working on getting it up on my site to widen my audience while I await my doctor's clearance to do a bit more lifting and driving. Rotator cuff surgery is the pits - and I will be better than new when I finish all of these strengthening exercises I now must do. Then I will be able to launch a site about that too!

I know that it will take me longer to make much money than many people would think is necessary. That is because I do have to do most of the things myself, not because I fear losing money, but because I don't have it to put up in the first place right now. That is not to say that I won't have it in three or six months. When I finally get enough pieces in place for jemyl.net, I will do a formal launch, most likely to bring out the forum when I get it up and running. Until then, I am going to work on perfecting my home page, implementing some ideas I have to expand the site offerings, get the rest of the pages designed and up, write a couple of series of autoresponder emails for members, and work on getting more traffic to http://www.jemyl.net and to some of the individual pages therein.

Am I a "tire kicker"? Of course! I see no problem with gleaning as much free or low cost information as I can from good, successful marketers. Will I ever buy anything? Yes, I do so almost every month. I have bought things since 2003 or before, including one of the earlier sets of DVDs by Corey Rudl. I get all of the free things I can from those marketers whom I respect. I even buy some things, some that are not even very new. I just don't buy very much and rarely can I spend more than $100 total in any given month. As I set up more domains and monetize my sites, I have even less to spend on courses and the like. Aweber, my hosting and my DSL have to come first! Once my affiliate, jewelry, adsense and direct sales income begin to regularaly exceed my business expenses I will, once more, start buying things. For now, my times pressing the "Buy Now" key will have to lag way behind my drooling on my laptop as I gaze longingly at the sales pages for the latest and greatest offers in my emails.

Is that fear? I sometimes think so. Still, a little fear is a good thing. It CAN keep one motivated to do more and do it better.

I hope this finds you and yours in the very best of health. May 2009 be a great year for you. I know it will be for me. See you at the top!

Partick, I agree that success usually comes only after you have failed. Where would we be if Edison gave up before failing 1,000 times before developing the light bulb? Failing to me is education. Everytime you fail you have just learned another way not to fail.

Hey Patric; I love your writing and speaking you remind me of a friend I have not seen in a few years he was from Vietnam and is one hard work man, both him and his wife. The job we worked at he really gave it everything he had. I think you are the same way about what you do and teach. I agee with what you said this sunday completely. The thing I think holds a lot of people back is they just down get it, you can show them how, you can write about how to do it, but until they actually do whatever it is themselves they haven't got it down yet. Thanks for the Sunday Blog Pages..

You are absolutely right. It's life long learning that we are referring here. We must be able to learn --> unlearn --> relearn. Lots of us only stop at learn, or some even jump from learn to relearn without unlearn. So we are unable to progress.
