Starbucks, Tai Chi, Halo 3, Baby And Basketball
In each incident and encounter we have, there are lessons to be learned – whether we take the time to look at it or not. Here are 5 observations and lessons that I like to share with you...
Starbucks 10 Seconds Rule
Do you know that Starbucks coffee baristas are instructed to throw away the coffee prepared if it's not being used within 10 seconds? So let's say you ordered a latte but somehow, he got delayed to mix the milk with the coffee. Bzzz, time's up. After 10 seconds, that coffee cannot be used anymore.
I believe this is one of the reasons why Starbucks coffee brewed is always fresh and it's maintained that way because they have a system. Yeah, the 10 seconds system. If you don't want to trade time for money, then you need to have a system or use someone else that is already proven to work.
Tai Chi Movement
I've started learning Tai Chi martial arts lately. One of the techniques I’ve learned is this-- no matter how hard you grab my hand, with the movement of my body, I will be able to break free easily. The reason is because I use leverage combined with a specific technique. When running your internet business, you MUST use the leverages that are available in front of you-- you can either waste hours to send out emails manually or use an autoresponder to send automatically. Leverage can do more than that-- Even if you're working at home alone, you can appear to be a million dollar company.
And just like Tai Chi, you got to apply the right techniques at the right time. Then you'll have a winner.
Xbox 360 – Halo 3
If you have no clue what’s Halo 3, it's a very well-known video game and you can check out their site at www.halo3.com. Once I started playing it, I couldn't stop because it is very addictive mainly because I want to know "what's next" after completing a level. Try playing it and you'll agree with me later on.
There's a very powerful marketing lesson to learn from it- the only way how you can get your prospect to read your salesletter or marketing messages 100% is to make it 'addictive'-- make your reader want to know more about your product by creating a sequence of "what's next". This should be applied to product launches as well.
What A Baby Wants
My brother's baby is 9 months old now. One thing I realize about babies- they know what they want and they'll do what they can to get it! That's the ultimate focus.
Once you found out what you want to do online, stay focus. Or if you're planning to learn a new business, then complete it 100%. I mean, did you see that a baby will ultimate gets what he/she wants with the intense focus? (smile)
Shooting Hoops Is Easy
Last week, I was playing basketball alone in my court, shooting the hoops. It was easy but after 30 minutes, it gets really boring because there's no competition. When someone's blocking me to shoot, it'll get MORE difficult and there's where the fun begins. Conclusion, games or sports are not fun if there are no challenges.
I used to whine when I'm facing obstacles for my internet businesses but when I start taking the metaphor of playing a game, I’m no longer that frustrated anymore. If you can treat doing business like playing a game, will you see things differently now?
You might think that this is like lying to yourself but if you just try it out, you'll soon realized that you're less stressful and better results will start to appear with a healthier mind. Look-- whether you're going to use the metaphor or not, you are STILL going to face those obstacles. They're unavoidable. So why not make the best out of it since there's nothing to lose.
If you've find value in these tips, please leave a Comment or feedback? Needless to say, I will definitely appreciate it because I read all Comments personally and gotten the chance to know you at the same time. And if you would like to share your own tips here, please post because I'm sure it'll be very helpful for other readers.

How about this analogy:
Gardening! You plant the seeds, water, till the soil, remove weeds - nothing! Keep watering, give it some time to develop, small shoots begin to appear. Then things start moving faster, plants blossom, flowers bloom. Once the garden is beautiful, someone asks - how can I get a great garden like that, in no time flat?

Hi Patric,
Nice to hear that you're playing games too. :-) Even I never play Halo 3 before, but I know it's really addictive to any level gamers.
Ok, It's my turn to share my lesson.
You're playing XBOX360 but I'm playing Wii. :-)
Wii Sports
I believe you've heard about Nintendo Wii before but I don't know you all have played Wii sports or not.
Personally, I really love Bowling game in Wii sports. It's unlimited fun when playing with my Wife, Mom and Dad. But I will bring me really boring feeling when I play alone or play with my wife.
This is also a powerful marketing lesson for me. The next service I will sell online, will bring my customer to face with like-minded peoples. This will always bring them a "fresh" and "competitive" feeling which will help them taking action on the community.
-Made customers stay with like-minded peoples
-Made customers don't feel that they're staying the same environment
That will be a cool community/social site!
Cheers!
This is an excellent article, Patric.
And it shows, all of us, how important it is to pay attention to what other companies - large or small - are doing well. How much you can learn even from businesses who are entirely different from yours.
To be successful, in today's competitive marketplace, an entrepreneur, who wants their own biz to succeed and profit, should always read, study and utilize the techniques and strategies of those who've set the standard.
You do it well, Patric. And thanks for passing on such great and useful information.

Hi Patric great writing... well, at least to me. you're slowly getting under my skin. Yup, I've had that from Starbucks before. The coffee made cannot be left lying around for 10 secs. HALO 3 is awesome.
My gaming experience is such :- I love playing strategy games. Build one's resources, army and conquer the whole map. After reaching higher levels, I find the gane getting tough. I usually die like in the first 5 mins of the game. GAME OVER! But I keep trying and trying and using different strategies and observing opponents'
moves ....and finally I've conquered the whole map. I get tons of resources, better army/units to build and secret bonuses revealed. AWSOME MAN!
Your experiences ring a bell. LOL
Shawn Peter
Oh ya! ... Has anyone bought the Google Nemesis and tried them yet?
Thanks.
Shawn Peter
I found that if I go to sleep thinking that the next day is going to be better than the day before and it works!
Have you seen the ad on TV for Halo3? Talk about wanting to watch the whole ad! No matter how many times I see it I always watch the whole thing.
I try to think of what kind of treatment I want to receive when I order from someone else. Then I better it, having happy customers makes the whole reason I'm online
even better.
I play basic games, BeJeweled 2 is my major game of choice!
Thanks for the great posts, they are very enlightening.

Interesting Metaphors you have there Patrick!
The 10 seconds rule that Starbucks apply is indeed a WOW to many. In this case, Starbucks have won half the battle of marketing as they have got their customers to be their marketing staffs as well. Look here, you even got the picture of the cup on your blog. I've gotta get a cup of Starbucks coffee later on..
I'm also in favor of your message behind the Tai Chi story. Moral of the story? LEVERAGE! The reason most people are able to become so highly successful is because they believe that no man is an island. They believe in applying OPM, OPT, OPR, etc.
Well, I practised Yoga and I find it has a lot of relation to doing business online as well.
Going into a yoga pose needs the right technique, it goes hand in hand with your breathing and focus. holding the pose for a few seconds can be a challenge too for those who are new or have no muscle flexibility.
it takes time to really be good in yoga.
everytime i go for my class, it reminds me of what i'm doing online now.
no rush, patience, be strong, focus, do not compete with others only with yourself... :-)
Great info! Thanks Patric!

Oh yea... I have a 7-month old baby at home and he will definitely get what he wants.
His lethal weapon - cry until he gets fed or anything else he wants. The problem is... sometimes you don't know what he wants... but most importantly the baby will do his best to get what he wants (and knows what he wants regardless).
This analogy is somehow the opposite of what Patric explains... if the baby were the customer, do we know EXACTLY what he wants? If we do, then the baby's demand will be easily satisfied. This is definitely learned by experience and also learning from the experience of others (though observation, reading, watching etc).
And I hope it somehow relates to the business world as well.

Hello Patric,
I'l take your XBox-360 Halo and What Baby Wants analogy.
So far I'm becoming addicted YouChanDoIt. Im always excited to see your name in my inbox wanted to see your update and tips.
And for "what baby wants", it reminds me of Mike Filsaime's Fox and Hedgehog story he share in his 7Figure Blueprint.
The Fox knows many things and can find many ways to reach the same goal for hunting the hedgehog. Rather than concentrate on one good strategy, fax is scattered and chases many trails at once.
Unlike Hedgehog, on the other hand, has only one strategy. When the Fox attackss, the hedgehog curls up tightly and becoming a tight spiky ball. Fox runs up and bites, hurting his nose in the process.
Just one trick for the hedgehog, but it does that one trick very well... Focus!
Thanks Patric
Don't stop sharing us your greatest secrets and I will continue playing
Y(You-Chan-Do-It)-Box Halo.
Hi Andrew,
Isn't it interesting? So many that failed forget to remember that a plant don't grow overnight unless it's from Jack and The Beanstalk. :-)
Seree,
Thanks for sharing. I play WII as well.
Jean,
You're right. Most business successes can be adapt to internet businesses.
Shawn,
Well, well, another fan of Halo 3! I'm playing Call Of Duty 4 right now.
Kim,
I know what you mean. By the way, did you check out halo3.com site? It's enough information to create a movie!
Jong,
It seems you're familiar with OPM, OPT and so on. Excellent.
JH,
Thanks for sharing.
D,
You're welcome.
Zamri!
It's good to 'see' you here.
Miguelo,
Thank you for your kind words.

Hi Patric,
Well, I'm not a gamer - just a busy internet mom - and yes, kids usually get what they want. It's not limited to babies.
As far as intrigue? Good movies and good books, and good articles keep you hooked.
I love the gardening analogy. You work hard with little results for a while. If you stop, there will be no results. If you keep going despite the little results, eventually you will have big gratification!
Great life lessons -
Carole
a.k.a.'Mother"
Excellent analogy Patric and I have to agree with the first comment as I have always used that saying,"Plant a seed, and watch it grow".Don't let the rain or the insects put you off!
You right Mr Chan,I think I will treat this more like a game, I sometimes focus so hard on trying to obtain my goal I get frustrated and angry with myself when I cannot to put the pieces together, but maybe if I treat it as a game, I will not be so inclined to get so stressed over it.THANKS!
Hiya Patric,
You hit the nail right on the head as far as applying what we observe and do in life.
My most successful venture which continues to grow without effort... came about one day getting a haircut.
I noted that everyone was looking around or reading. The first thing that crossed my mind was we were all a captive audience.
Whether people were waiting for their turn, or in the barber's chair, most everyone wanted something to read while passing the time.
That is when I got the idea of publishing a one-page newsletter using the thousands of private label articles I had sitting on my computer.
It costs me nothing to publish the newsletter. As a matter of fact it's very profitable because local businesses pay for their ads to be printed and distributed on the back of each weekly issue.
Within each issue I include my affiliate links to various products which compliments the article.
After finding great success with the barber shops, I did the same thing with hair salons and beauty parlors... which proved to be even more successful and profitable because women shop and buy more than men.
In effect, I combined offline and online marketing strategies. Also, given the fact that I have been a print broker since 1992, I get all my printing at wholesale.
Who would have ever thought that getting a haircut could prove to be so profitable?
As you demonstrated in Tai Chi... leverage (private label articles) with the right technique (newsletter/print advertising) proved to be a winner.
Hiya Again Patric,
I forgot to mention that I wrote a highly complimented article on combining online and offline marketing techniques at: http://www.qassia.com/the-forgotten-profits-of-print-advertising if anyone would like to read it.
It worked for me, and I know it will work for others just as well... not to mention it's a great way to build a list of fresh new buyers who look upon you as being an authority because you're a publisher.
