The Piece Of Advice I Took Home...
It all begins on New Year.
I got a text SMS from a friend of mine, who is a big time entrepreneur.
The message was...
"Happy New Year and I wish you’ll make 10 millions this year."
I replied,
"Thanks! But now I got to work harder. (smile)"
After a few minutes, I got this message back from him:
"No. You're wrong. You just need to work smarter."
The message is so simple but it paraphrases the whole idea increasing income in my business, and probably in life.
I was stunned for a few second.
It had me thinking-- Am I working smarter today?
Again, this is nothing new because we've been told or read about it a thousand time. In the begining, it leaves no impact to me until I start to UNDERSTAND the message.
Knowing and understanding is two different things, although most people think they are the same. That's also the same reason why people failed to make money online after going through informational courses-- Because they KNOW the information, but do not understand what it actually means.
If you make more money by working harder, I'm sorry to say that's nothing to be proud of. It's just a matter of spending more hours which will lead to less quality time.
Working smarter is about increasing your hourly rate. Meaning, you're still spending the same amount of time working but you're getting paid more now.
That's it.
Figure out that and you'll be a happier person. I guarantee.
You can work 'smarter' in various of ways. Instead of spending hours trying to crack the code of the search engine algorithm, spend your time building a relationship with JV Partners so that you can get traffic from email promotions ANYTIME YOU WANT.
Don't design graphics if you don't know how. Get someone else to do it by paying them or barter trade whatever you got.
If you want to learn something, don't waste your time trying to figure out on your own. ASK. If no one is to answer you, buy for the knowledge and experience. No money? Well, than you'll need to weigh what's important for you to spend on in the future.
Focus on the ideas and business plan. Not just how to make money but how to build an online business that generates income for you.
Work smarter by observing what are the trends that are proven to be cash cows instead of creating your own trend. Frankly, I'll prefer to be innovative than creative.
Many more other ways you can work smarter. Maybe you have better ones or agree with mine? Whatever your thought is, please note them in the Comment below because it'll be appreciated.
I don't want to work harder. Do you?

It is always about working smarter. I agree with the advice that you need to be doing the highest/most profitable work and delegating the rest. I also believe you need to have an understanding of the processes you are delegating so that you can communicate more effectively what you need done and so that if you need to, you can pick up the ball and run with it.
Hi Patric,
You are right again, of course. Working smarter becomes easier once you understand the concept.
The key is to have a clear vision of what your trying to accomplish and work backwards to figure out the easiest way to get there. The simple law of a straight line.
Being in the self help industry as well, I see many people working harder at things that don't bring them closer to their desires, that is why a clear vision is so important!
Thanks for the great information, Patric. Good advice as usual!
Abs. right, Patric! "Work smart, get outta the rut!" That's my motto too. And delegate, delegate, innovate. Which brings me to my question:
I'm in charge of marketing a Convention in Toronto in July - this ethnic community's few and spread all over the world and not very interested - how do I go about getting huge numbers to sign up?
Somebody said write a humor blog, which I started 3 days ago - pretty good, I'm already getting 300 visitors a day to read it - but I need 10,000 visitors a day!
Read the blog, if you can forward it to your lists or recommend it to others, I'd be grateful - here it is:
http://2008goanconvention.com/blog/index.php
And if you get any bright ideas how to make my Convention go viral in 2 weeks, I'll certainly buy that!!

Hi Cyndi,
Thanks.
You're right-- First, it's important to understand the concept of working smarter. Just knowing it is just like reading another book.
The paradigm shift happens when we understand and start taking action towards achieving the purpose of working 'smarter'.

Hi Patric,
I just join your Chan Do Chartered Membership yesterday. I spend the whole night until morning listening to the Audios while downloading the membership materials.
I am consider a newbie(eventhough 11months on-line already) and I also purchase your Backend Mastery because I to work smarter like you say, not harder. I was a workoholic for 20 years and went burst, stupid...
Ok, back to your Chan Do Membership. I don't know where to start and work smart as I downloaded so many materials and got confused.
I leaved questions in the member's area and hopefully you can see how I can solve my problems the smart way as your staffs replaid me & I am going nowhere.
Most importantly, it's re-capturing the inspiring ideas that you wrote and it's always motivating reading your blog.
Thanks.
Best Regards,
Frankie Teo
Hi Patrick,
Good post! You are absolutely right. I would like to add that there is also only so much you can do within a 24 hour period regardless of how hard you work.
By working smarter you can use leverage to your advantage and achieve significantly better results without working harder or longer.
All the very best!

Yes, very good advice Patric, and it's really what part of my goals are for this year. I spend so much time on maintenance etc.
It is really not leaving enough time to push forward.
I'm in the process of automating as much as possible so I can free up more of my time.
I've also began to implement things in a much more structured systematic process, which needed to be done. I've no choice in the matter I came to realize.
I've joined your Chan Do Automation program as well, knowing it will help me to keep focused on sticking to my plans. Looking forward to going through 2008 with you this way.
Cheers

Hi Patric,
A good post to notify myself to plan to work smarter not harder.
Good to go in 2008!
Cheers,

Hi Francis,
Thanks for the post.
It's really hard to formulate a plan or strategy without the whole story but a quick note.
To answer your question, working hard will be trying to spread the news on your own.
Working smart is locating the key people and influencers of your market-- determine what they'll get for helping you.
Best of luck!

Personal Development for the Book Smart
Hi Patric,
A good topic for the start of a new year.
Any tips on attracting key influencers to add content to my membership site?
There are many benefits but the harder I "push" it, the more wary they seem to become....and yet we would both benefit..
Patric,
That is the best Quote around, and it has been around for many years. We just forget that we should work smarter then harder.
Some times it seems to sneak up on you when you are trying to get a business of any kind started or expanded, especially with the evry day tasks of living can get in the way.
Thank you for the reminder. I needed that and I believe many others did also.
Thank you again,
Gladys
Hi Patrick,
Very timely and accurate!
I know several millionaires who do not get to enjoy the rewards of being a millionaire because they keep working harder rather than smarter.
Unfortunately, they don't get to spend time with their family and friends because they haven't figured out how to work smarter (delegate or outsource) instead of work harder (working 16-18 hour days because they won't shift the workload to others).
Here's hoping we all work smarter in 2008 and enjoy more of the rewards from our labor!

working smarter = by using other people skills + other people money + other people time
Hi Patric, Happy New Year, as usual you make a lot of sense, working smarter, not harder, should be everyone's objective, not only in marketing but also in life.
In everyday life we ask friends, family or neighbors to help us with various tasks which are too much for us to do on our own, or we pay someone to do it for us, this is "working smart".
We can also buy the tools to make our task easier. For instance using a power tool, say a screw-driver will help us drive many screws in without much effort, as opposed to using a hand-held screwdriver which takes longer to do the job and can leave you with a sore wrist with the continuous twisting movement, this is "working hard".
In Marketing we can get many tools to help automate alot of the work and leave us to get on with other things, or we can hire someone to do that job for us at a reasonable cost. (working smart)
I believe there are alot of marketers who do nothing else but market their products. They don't know how to set up a website or set up an autoresponder. They're not interested in these things.
They delegate the work to others for a reasonable percentage of the profits on the front product but make a whole lot more on the backend product. So in effect they do very little and make a fortune in the process.
So work hard until you can afford to work smart, then leave the hard work to others.
Working smarter instead of harder is part of the reason I'm taking a break from eBay right now while I concentrate on building my information business. It seemed like I was pouring hours into writing my listings on eBay in return for tiny sales. Once I get my information business going, I'll reconsider eBay, and see if I can get it to become a gateway to recurring income, instead of just individual sales.
Hi Emeraldgold,
Your examples are definitely accurate.
It's better to earn a portion of profit and work less than make all of the profit but work like crazy. If you can delegate good enough, earning a lot of small portion will allow you to make more while working less.

Hi Patric..
I absolutely agree with u.
why work harder when you can work smarter and achieve things faster.
On the other hand, if working smarter means outsourcing those things you don't want or don't know how to do, this is only applicable if we have the $$ or resources to do so.
however, for those looking to make extra money with no or little money and does not have much money to spend in the first place..this notion of outsourcing may not really work. unless non-monetary deals can be forged.
just my thoughts...

A good way to start the New Year. Let's do a self-check in say 3 months to see if we are putting words into action. I'm definitely going to give it a go to work smarter in 2008.
Hi Leigh,
Good point. For eBay business, it could take up a big chunk of your time. You should use it as a tool to generate regular customers for your online business so that you don't need to depend on eBay all the time.

Hi one and all ... a great start to the new year is a good book that can become your road-map to working smarter instead of harder ... as we all know or should learn life was not meant to be a struggle, simply find some one who does it better and then duplicate with Patric recommending this book you should not go wrong … thanks Patric Ive ordered it...
All my best to you and your 2008

Yes,yes, and yes!!! I have worked "harder" most of my life and am finally getting into working "smarter".
What good is it to have wonderful children, a beautiful wife, and all the money you could ever want if all your time is spent working for that money?
Thanks for mentioning "work smarter" it is one of the most important things online marketers should learn and understand.
