Thinking Out Of The Box

It's been a while since I've emailed you. The reason was due to my attention on last week's event where I spoke at the World Internet Summit.
Patric Chan, speaking at the World Internet Summit 2007
Today, I've just arrived in Sydney to speak at Unleash Your Marketing Genius Event by Stephen Pierce starting from tomorrow.
I wanted to write about today's topic for a while now but couldn't find the time until now in my hotel. You've heard about thinking out of the box before. And it's an important aspect for entrepreneurs in today's internet marketing game.
In my opinion, thinking out of the box is about being able to see opportunities or solutions that others can't see.
Opportunities are everywhere and I want you to be aware of that. When it comes to opportunities, I would want to focus on opportunities that are NOT obvious to others. For instance, trying to get rank for the keyword 'dog training' will be too challenging. So you were taught about the long tail keywords such as 'dog training for women' or 'potty dog training'. That's a solution. But a solution that's shared by many other marketers too.
Think outside of the box. Instead of trying to compete on the same level, think of what other opportunities are available. Where else you can get free traffic other than Google.com by using the same method? How about focusing on getting top ranking for a 'dog training' blog instead at www.blogsearch.google.com.
You would probably notice that there are several good ebooks being sold from $37 to $77 lately. Did you bought any? I'm sure you get the value.
Here's the thing-- some of those sold were in huge quantities in the past. In thousands. Some sold 5,000 copies during the launch. And most of the time, those types of ebooks share valuable tactics, not strategies. You see, a tactic would not work effectively anymore if a lot of people are using it. For instance, if you learn a new trick to get top position for the keyword 'buying hosting' in Google Adwords. And it works. But what if 1,000 other people are using the same tactic after they have discovered it? Since there's only one top placing in Adwords, do you see that the tactic will no longer work after it's being over-used?
This is the same thing that happened to the Google Adsense 'gold rush' years ago. That time, a software was introduced that can generate thousands of keyword-targeted webpage in a day. In the beginning it works amazingly. I know because I've gotten my share during the good ol' days. Until everyone is using that software and Google starts banning massive auto-generated non-useful pages.
So where does 'thinking out of the box' comes in here?
For those who saw the opportunity, they have created website templates that can be used with the software for the users to buy. They sell the 'shovel'.
If you have read a valuable tactic in a $77 ebook and you know 5,000 people have also read it, can you see yourself creating a 'spin-off' or complimentary product based on that tactic? Instead of focusing HOW to use that tactic that 5,000 others might use, help the 5,000 people to maximize the potential of the tactic with another 'shovel'. That's picking up opportunity.
Think out of the box. What are the standard methods of getting traffic in your particular niche?
Search engine optimizations?
Google Adwords?
Buying ezine adds?
Are these the same methods that your competitors are using right now?
Think of other methods that they're not massively inclined of doing. For instance, if you have your own product, you can focus on building YOUR OWN affiliates to promote your product. This will give you responsive traffic and also, they're 100% free. I mean, you should do this if you have your own product because this is be the extra advantage you have.
So what's your thought about "thinking out of the box"? I'm not sure whether you agree with me on the importance of it. Feel free to leave a Comment below so that I know what you have in mind and also, let me know if you got some value of what I've wrote today. :-)
You "Chan" Do It!

P.S: Happy thanksgiving. (smile)

Hi Patric
Congratulations on speaking at the World Internet Summit and welcome to Australia. 5 Months ago I would have said "Welcome to Sydney" but I relocated a few months ago to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
Thinking out of the box is a challenge. Especially if you need to make some money fast. It is fine when you have the time to do it and the money to invest but for the average newbie it can be challenging.
I suppose I was hoping to get your thoughts since this message came through.
I recently started a site www.onedollarwilldo.com in an effort to raise some money so that I can stay in business.
Personally, I didn't want to run a traditional 'fire sale' because I was going to time limit it at the lower prices.
But I had almost 30 products, some with resell rights and I decided that I would just tell my story and let the people decide if they want to help me and what they think it is all worth.
Do you think that is 'out of the box'? I think I am providing a lot of value to people who might have something to spare but can't afford the $37 or $77 ebooks.
I would be curious about your opinion.
I am hoping that this 'out of the box' idea might just be different enough to work. I am not sure if it has been done before?
Cheers
Brad
Hi Patric,
I want to thank you for sharing this valuable concept or idea with us.
I have spot the problem too (i.e. too many people using the same tactics) but have not found the solution yet (perhaps I'm too lazy to think) until I read this amazing post.
It's undeniable that you provide tons and tons of value to all your readers.
All appreciate all the knowledge that you share. :)
Thank you.
P.S. Enjoy the UYMG event. ;)
Hi Patric,
I agree with you that the key to success is to focus to strategy not tactics.
I got this point from you at the last workshop & I'm preparing the strategy to achieve instead of collecting the tactics like before.
You're great! (again) :-)
Take care,
Hi Brad,
Thanks for your note.
If you're starting out, I would focus on building an online business in niche markets instead of in the 'internet marketing' or 'business opportunity' niches.
To make quick money, the best is to jump on affiliate marketing. Learn the right methods to do this and you'll be able to see some money soon.
Cheers
Patric

Raymond and Seree,
THANKS! :-)

Thanks Patric, I wanted to try and use some of the assets that I already had. I had been collecting this stuff for months and not putting it to any use.
I have been toying with getting into the affiliate marketing, perhaps it is the targetted niches that offer the best value.
Cheers, thanks for your help.
Brad
Hi Patric,
This is a really important post. Sometimes I look for next big thing from an internet guru but that trains me to depend on them NOT myself.
Thinking out of the box requires that I break those chains. I guess the best thing I can do is adopt the habit of creating at least 3-5 out of the box ideas each day.
Thanks,
Mark
PS. Looking forward to the next coaching club call.
Hi Patric
I agree too many people copy each other online, they see someone have success and try to copy it.
But thinking out of the box allows you branch out and discover much more I feel.
You made some very good points yet again.
Sally :)
