How long can you stand?
I'm just back from Singapore yesterday.
It was a fun trip but today, my girlfriend, Emily
falls sick. :-( She's not an internet marketer
but makes some money from Google Adsense. You can
see her casual blog at:
http://www.emilykhoo.com
Tons of pictures there.
Then, my staff is also sick today. I guess
it must be the weather.
So I end up doing A LOT of work today ... And
these are not money-makers. These are WORK.
Which leads me to share this important
thought that I've realized while replying tons
of emails ...
"How long can you stand?"
How long can you continue to reply emails, read
more ebooks, surf the internet, read other
marketer's salesletter, creating your own content,
submit articles, generate keywords, etc if you
don't know what you're trying to achieve?
I mean, can you do that for 7 days a week?
The truth is, it won’t be possible for you
to complete everything by your own. If you
can, I'll like to hear how you do that because
I will definitely want to learn from you.
If you're not 'suffering' from any of these tasks,
you won't know how much time and energy
it'll eat you up. The next thing you know, you've
become an "employee" to your online business.
I'm not surprise you'll even win the "employee
of the month" award if there's such an award.
For instance, Emily's sick and she won't
be able to do anything today. She definitely
needs a good rest and I really hope she'll get
well soon.
But what if ... I fall sick as well today?
Then you won't be reading this email now.
I was reading a book by Michael Gerber
called the e-Myth ... teaching business owners
about how to build a successful small business
and stay happy.
Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying that I'm
unhappy or anything. In fact, I'm very happy with
all of my online businesses today that are
generating more money than I've imagined possible.
Read that book. It's good stuff. He teaches
about systemizing a small business so that the
business owner won't be 'drowned' in it.
Another marketer who teaches very well about
this topic recently is Rich Schefren. Other
than that, I did pick up some tips from another
marketer, Mike Filsame on how to manage
emails. Now, I'm NOT going to give any direct
or affiliate links here because I don't want to
sell anything to you.
You see, most gurus teach about creating a
"system" for your online business.
Everybody understands that. Ideally, that's
what you should be focusing on -- EVERYDAY.
What you need to do now is to stop "doing"
anything related to making money online. Yup,
stop writing that darn article that you're
trying to complete for the past few hours.
What I want you to do (for your own good) is
to think ...
"Am I doing this to help me make money online?"
Stephen Pierce, a close friend and mentor of mine
taught me about creating a 'brand' for myself. From
that one idea, all of my online businesses is just to
enhance that brand and resolve around it. Anything
that is not directly related will be secondary priority.
So if your goal is to achieve a certain result
by the end of your dateline, are you doing what
you can today and tomorrow to reach that?
Let's say you don't have a website yet ...
should you be learning how to get traffic?
Again, this question is very subjective. Some
may say yes because it's going to help them
when the time is 'right'. Great. So if you know
when is the 'right' time like when your webpage
will be up and running, I have no argument that
you should start learning about traffic generation
this instant. But if you don't even know how to buy
a domain name yet, don't you think that the a better
immediate action item should be focusing on how
to set up the website first?
Lesson learned ... don't get distracted too much.
A little bit is fine. No one's perfect. You and me
will get distracted along the way.
Do you get emails requesting for joint ventures?
Here's how to evaluate the request ...
Does your participation in this JV will help you
to move closer to achieving your OWN GOAL?
Really, it's that simple.
(Tip: If you're sending a JV request to marketers,
seek for what goal of theirs that they're trying
to achieve. Supplement your proposal to help them
achieve what they want and your JV request
conversion will definitely be higher.)
Does that make you a bad person because you're
thinking of your own goal only?
Not really. I want to achieve my own goal first so
that I can spend more time with my aging parents
and grandma (She's 82 now). I want to be by Emily's
side each time she laughs and cheers. I want to
waste time watching movies. I want to sit by the
beach reading my favorite books. I want to play with
my dog. I want to do so many things including offering
my time to help those that need my help BUT ...
I can't do any of those if my own goals are not
achieved yet. So I think it's normal for everyone
to consider focusing on their own goals.
So here's the thing I want to share with you --
Your time is very valuable. Spend it wisely
to be super effective. Here are a few tips you
can start doing to 'create' more time for you
and your online business:
1. Delegate the tasks that others can do as good
as you or better. Like, packaging a product to be
shipped out. Now, can others do that? You bet.
Little things like these will save you a lot of
time in a long run.
2. Stay focused on what you're trying to achieve
from your online business. If your goal is to build
a website that will rank #1 in Google for the
keywords "frog jumping competition", I suggest
that you start focusing to build that website
and learn all you can about search engines. Forget
other courses temporarily that are unrelated to it like
affiliate marketing, email marketing, copywriting, etc.
3. Think first before you do anything. Are you doing
what you're supposed to do ... or you're just avoiding
doing the things you dislike?
4. If possible, follow a proven system to achieve
your goal. Anthony Robbins once said, "Success
leave clues". Pick up the clues from courses,
people, books, etc.
5. Don't fall sick. Just kidding. You can't stop
the act of nature. But you can prevent it. Stay
healthy by doing healthy stuff. Basically, eat
good food, exercise more and if you have some
extra budget, buy some health supplements.
I just realized I've 'spent' 37 minutes to write this
email! {FIRSTNAME}, this email is not helping me to get
closer to my goal. But it's fine if I've helped you in
anyway to be more successful in your online business.
So you see, you don't have to be rigid all the time.
It's fine to do things that your heart tells you. Listen
to "him". Listen to him more and you'll find out that
he's as smart (Maybe smarter!) than Mr. brain. (Smile)

Hello Patric,
Thank you for this post. I really
enjoyed reading every word you
wrote here. I can feel that it's
coming right from your heart and
I really appreciate the time you
took to put all the nice sentences
together.
Taking 37 minutes to write something
like this really impressed me,
especially if it's not related to
selling stuff... :-)
I've also re-learned from you here
that the power of focus is very
much necessary especially if we're
getting lots and lots of offers
everyday. Sometimes, I got tempted
to swipe my card and spend
unnecessarily. That's when I need
someone to hold me back and tell
me to check back what I am really
trying to accomplish in the long
run.
Hmmm... I'm checking a few points
here and I think there's room for
improvement for me.

Patric, your comments are right on the money. Thanks for taking the time to put them together and helping all to stay focused on what really is the most important of all our many activities -- building the business.
The more productive work that is done right now (NOW) the greater exponential return we will enjoy down the road.
Do something every day toward that end and the results will be plentiful.
Thanks, Patric, for all your excellent coaching and friendship.
And best wishes for a speedy recovery to Emily and your staff.
Hello! Patric Chan
Well I have been following your
marketing advice now for some time.
I have used your technique's on
many and in many of my Programs!
I want you to know that their are
some issues to follow-up on and I
have no Idea how to reach you...
This comment button is the tool
I feel you will get to read. Most
places on my web I leave my personal Phone Number and I answer each call personal like. The calls
I miss I do pick-up and call my
readers...They are shocked.
Your advice is Great and I would
like to speak personal with you!

Hi Patric, I enjoy receiving your emails and reading the blog. I agree that as wonderful as the internet is, it is so easy to get distracted, fall into information overload syndrome which ultimately leads to analysis paralysis and demise of thousands of online businesses.
Be selective when choosing a mentor, focus on the business priorities and plan to succeed supported by a huge dose of self belief.
For those of your readers who need some extra help with planning and focusing, they are welcome to get a free copy of Plan Do Check Act, my non theory, practical but fun ebook on planning and continuous improvement...

Hi Patric,
Very informative and interesting post. We who are trying to make the Internet "Thing" happen do get wrapped up in every offer coming down the pike and get tend to get sidetracked.. your words are timely and helpful ( at least for me )..
I have one thing to say about Internet Marketing .. anyone who thinks it is easy to make it online .. DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT ...
but the rewards are worth the effort.
So for anyone trying and getting discouraged...
FIGHT ON !!!
Pick your battles ( delegate )
Outsource ( use others talents )
and R-E-L-A-X once in a while.
Thanks again for your post I really enjoyed it.

Hi Patric
I have to protest that you didn't waste the 37 minutes it took you to write this post/email. These are things everyone involved in any entrepreneurial venture needs to keep in mind. In fact, I'm undergoing a sort of epiphany in this area myself. Sometimes I wonder why I quit the corporate world because I was working 12-14 hour days and now that I'm working for myself, I sometimes work even longer hours!!! It really makes you stop and think.
So, I appreciate you taking the time to write this. I won't put any link back to my site or recommend some affiliate resource to your readers. I just wanted to make an honest compliment.
I hope that Emily feels better soon and that you don't catch whatever she has! :-)
Take care,
Train
Hi Patric,
thanks for taking the time out to write about this subject to us. I've made the mistake of trying to tackle too much, and have learned I should try and focus more.
It's great to see how you've looked at and managed the problem. You share some very useful insights.
thanks heaps.
Sal.
Patric,
As always your words inspire! When we are working all the time, it is sometimes forgotten that we are doing this to be "free" at some point down the road.
And, we often get turned around trying to get things done in the right order.
But, when we stop, and listen, to those few who are truly "in the know," it makes the whole vision clearer, and we can then re-direct our efforts towards what we truly want. To help others with what we know so they can have a better life, and to be rewarded for those efforts.
Always a pleasure to learn from the master, and believe me, there are very few true masters out there.
But, Patric, you are definitely one of, if not, the best, when it comes to internet marketing.
Make it a great day!

Hi Patric
One of the best email I've received so far. Purely fun, from the bottom of your heart. No sales talk.
I was introduced to E-Myth quite a while ago, and am still trying to work "ON" my business instead of "IN" the business.
Hi Patric,
You comments hit me between the eyes and maybe knocked some sense into me. I think we are all guilty of becoming distracted and put off the hard work involved in building an online income. I've posted your email on the wall and it will help me "think" about the tasks I am performing and if they are relevant to my immediate online goals. I've even sat and wrote those goals out in the order they need to be accomplished and will not skip around on them but work them in order. Thank you for the inspiration.
Hi Patric,
This is Walter C and I have seen both your blog and emily. So much to learn from you guys and so little time. At time the info just too overwhelmed. Guess have to really focus what I want to acheive from the net mktg. Since you are from pinang guy then I'm from Keday guy (SP). Net biz is about relationship and leveraging, don't you think so?
Chow and take care !
Hey Paric,
You are right about the "system". Without a system we struggle more and we can make only a fraction of it.
Radu Ciocan
PS: you drop here in the blog post token {FIRSTNAME} from the ARP3.
This was a really awesome article. Just when I was feeling "swamped" with the tons of info out there, this article helped me focus on what I am aiming for.
Thanks Patric!!
Chan,
thank you so much, you teach me the simple system that will help me to think about myself and my own future.
Regards,
Sanny mj
